Question:
I have been a substitute teacher for nearly a year in a number of different public schools in the New York area. At first, I really struggled with maintaining order in the classroom but have since improved, except in one school that I sub regularly at.

The typical class in this school includes a group of loud, screaming kids who never listen to anything I say and automatically assume that they have a free period because they have a substitute. These kids usually sit in the back and play games and distract those who are on task.

Sometimes, the regular teacher never leaves an assignment and when one is left, the instructions left are either too vague or I am not provided with the right materials to properly execute the lesson plan. Once, I was asked to have the students complete an activity on internet research but was not allowed to let the students use the laptops, even though the assignment was to be done on the computer and most of these kids do not have internet access at home.

Whenever situations like this occur I am forced to either improvise or come up with another activity that the kids already see it as a filler assignment and never complete.

I tried asking some of the staff members, such as the dean and the sub coordinator for advice and they advised me that I need to be more like the regular teachers and yell and intimidate the kids to behave

These same people regularly “leave me out to dry” when things start to get too out of hand. Instead they view my inability to discipline and control the class as an indication of my own lack of ability, even though this school is the only one I sub at where I seem to have this problem. It creates a situation where the students know they can do anything and get away with it because I am viewed as too soft and the staff will not do anything to support me.

What would be the best way to discipline these students?

Question:
Hi there, i need help to find a good american topic with preferably many different kinds of resources (books, magazines, newspapers, etc) to write a research paper. can you please help?

these were the instructions: pick something American for a topic to research. this might be somethign having to do with american culture, subcultures, history, medicine, science, sports, art suck as music or lit., economics, or the judicial system.
my teacher gave us an example: a more focused paper topic would be something like: what was the psycological effects the chicago “Blacksocks” of 1919 had on the post Great War American psyche.

thank you to anyone that tries! and 10 points to best topic!!
please! thank you again!

Question:
She is the most wonderful person, a teacher, new auntie, and best friend. Her name is April. I live 500 miles away from her and need all the support I can get. I have a new baby and can’t get out much for support groups. She was moved from home hospice to a care facility today and is fading slowly but surely. I miss her already and can barely deal being this far away.

Please help suggest anything you think might help me and my family get through this time. I feel like I am caught between heaven and hell.

Also, if you have a younger (or older) sister–you might want to give her an extra big hug tonight.

Question:
I have been a substitute teacher since I graduated college in 2008. I do love the job but at every school I have worked at the students think I look like Will Farrell. From the start I wondered how I should take this. I mean I could take it lightly and smile ever so often or be a total jerk and let them know I am no such person. Its not my nature to be a rude and angry person so I let it go and laugh with them. I have become the favorite substitute teacher. I have no problems maintaining control of the class. Truth is the students care a great deal for me and respect me out of their true kindness. I have become very fond of them and often treat them as if I was their parent. If any thing I often feel like the character Mrs Roberts played by the late Henry Fonda. The question is am I an effective substitute teacher for allowing them to see me as this third rate actor? What should I do differently so they see me as a real person?
This response is for Lillybel.
No I don’t think Henry Fonda is a third rate actor. I love his work. Its Will Farrell that I think is low brow. As far as changing my hair, it looks nothing like his. Farrell has curtly darkish red and mine is dark brown and straight. We both have the same facial structure and height. That’s why the students think he looks like me. I am after all one year older. The big difference is I am thin and muscular and Farrell is overweight and pudgy. Peace
