Question:
[This automatically posted to "preschool" and I wasn't sure that was the best category, so I'm re-posting it here. Apologies if that's confusing/time wasting. I don't even know how important the categories are and it does cost me points, but I really, really want answers to this one!]
Wow, I find myself in an interesting situation. I’m abroad because I followed my spouse who is studying there. While here we need to eat so I looked for work. I found work teaching English to children age 3 – 8 (in separate classes by age) but with almost NO SUPPORT. I’ve probably got no business doing this, but I’m trying to make a go of it and look out for the interests of all involved. I have no experience teaching outside of University, so this is quite a stretch. My native (non-English) language skills are decent but the kids can definitely tell that I’m a foreigner. The classes are only one time per week for an hour. I’m finding it tremendously challenging to keep order (I’m by nature on the loose side, but I can’t have the kids running around on the table tops or screaming so loud that they disturb other classrooms). My sense is that my first goal is to keep things under control so that no one is hurt and they could potentially learn, second for them to have fun so that they actually *want* to come back and last on the list, to teach them a little something of English — the more the better, but those first two goals definitely take priority. Most of the kids are in first or second grade, though I have one group of pre-schoolers. I really need help finding good resources for how to best instruct kids this age. It would be a great bonus if that material were more specific as to how to teach them English. Did I mention that I have next to zero control over the physical environment — I teach in whatever spare space the school has — usually another teacher’s classroom after normal school hours. These can sometimes be great with few distractions and chalk board up front, but sometimes they are filled with “stuff” and there’s nothing there for me to use except what I bring with me. Please, please help. I’m either getting kids acting out (climbing on tables, messing with everybody’s stuff and hitting other kids) or kids “bored” with everything I try. I’m slowly getting the first under control, but I still don’t feel like I’ve had a really good session for the kids that are actually there to learn something or “play with English”, as it were. I’d be interested in getting my education in teaching young children through reading widely and any suggestions you might have, but I don’t have any idea where to start.
