Greatest Common Factor – GCF – YourTeacher.com

Posted by Helpful Teacher on 14th June and posted in Math Teacher Resources

For a complete lesson on Greatest Common Factor, or GCF, go to www.yourteacher.com – 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to find the Greatest Common Factor between two numbers by using factor trees. Students also learn to find the Greatest Common Factor between two or more monomials that involve variables using the following rules. To qualify for the Greatest Common Factor, the variable must appear in every monomial. If the variable does appear in every monomial, the Greatest Common Factor uses the smallest power on that variable.

Shows how, but not why. In 30, there are 5 sixes (5 X 6). In 42, there are 7 sixes (7 X 6). You can take sixes out of each, leaving a ratio of 5:7, or a fraction of either 5/7 or 7/5 (depending on the context of the problem). Teaching via algorithm is not teaching for understanding. Delivery was dull and unmemorable. Also lacking is why we need to do this.
