Question:
I am a resident substitute teacher for a middle school, which means I report to the middle school everyday for an assignment unless told otherwise. I’m guaranteed a job everyday, basically. On Thursday at 11:00 am the school district calls and offers me a long term position for four months at an elementary school for a resource class, where the students will be pulled from their general class and come to me for 30 minutes out of the day. I asked if they’re were lesson plans and a full time teacher’s aide and they said yes, it’s really easy. So I said yes. I assumed they would notify my middle school and they didn’t! I called to let them know and they were very upset that I took the job. I told them I was considered a last resort since not many subs have a Special Needs certificate. Anyways, I go to the elem. school and find out that they are somewhat strict and they’re are no lesson plans and the teacher hasn’t even met with her students yet and the aid is a long term sub too!
And that my aid isn’t guaranteed a job with me, she may leave at any time. I show up on Friday and discover all this along with the district saying that I’m to get a brand new, permanent aide on Monday! I called the district to confirm, and they said they aren’t sure about that. I said I don’t have time to train a new aide when I don’t even know what I’m supposed to train them in. This really frustrated me and made me think twice about accepting this. They’re are tons more problems to this job as well. My question is should I on Monday tell them I don’t want it now and have them look for someone else and try to get my resident sub status back at the middle school or should I just stick it out? All answers are appreciated. Thanks!
There’s another resource teacher that will be doing all the IEP’s. Mine and hers! I feel bad for her. And she has more kids then me. So it easy, but not if I have to deal with a headache of a Vice Principal and Principal. I just finished a three month 7-8th grade resource class that I did in April thru the end of June. And got a one week break, and then they threw me on this one. I know it will be simple, but I’m afraid of the headache I’ll get from the administrators and the other teachers. I will also be getting at-risk kids in August while my C track kids leave.
This is for ateachmom. I’ve long term subbed four times now for this district. This was my fourth assignment and it was handled very unprofessionally. My last long term assignment was for a 7th-8th grade Language Arts Resource class and I created all the lesson plans for that. I know what it entails because I’ve done it already. In this new assignment I was told the lesson plans were all done, and YES you can create a daily lesson plan for four months, it’s been done by me and others as well. I don’t know what district you’re in, but ours requires it. I didn’t want to create lesson plans again. I was done with that. They said it was a piece of cake assignment, even if it was, my resident sub position was more important to me that this long term assignment. Thanks for your concern though.
