Question:
Our teacher asked us to make a brochure on either the middle colonies, the southern colonies or New England to persuade people to move to that area. I chose New England. He said to be creative. I’m not very creative so could someone give me some tips to make my brochure sound creative. In the brochure we have to include climate, physical features, resources, persuasive statements, and a list of the colonies. Please help.. (:

Question:
I’m not sure if it’s just America or not, but let’s just focus on that for now. No one can argue that from the beginning of the 20th century or earlier, this is how things go. Kids grow up faster and mature faster but somehow the generation ends up collectively stupider than the last. I will admit this about my generation so it’s not an issue of bias. Why does it happen? I know why technically but I’m looking for more of a philosophical answer.

Just a theory, and call me a pessimist but the physical maturation and mental deficiency of kids in the future will lead to more and more unplanned pregnancies leading to more everyday stress, pollution, lack of resources, less teachers and more students, before long humans go the way of the etch-a-sketch doodle you made when you were drunk that night and broke into that Toys R’ Us to steal your nephew an Xbox.
lastuntakenscreenname – you almost got me there, but as I said, I was refering to America. Of course we all know kids in Switzerland and Asia are smarter than ever… Like I care!

Question:
Let this be known now I love math. I have never gotten below an A until this year because of my new teacher. My teacher oftentimes leaves early or teaches with these weird out of the box ways that would be fine if it was being taught to kids that could follow his line of thinking. Overall, no one understands his class to the point where his FIRST quiz ended up being curved because no one got a 100% and it was supposed to be REVIEW!!! Also, he’ll tell us to read a section and he’ll come and quiz us the next day without even teaching it. I try to take advantage of my school’s math tutoring available during lunch but I don’t want to have to keep skipping lunch to go. I tried to use Trig for Dummies but it doesn’t have what we are covering. The only 2 sources I could find are mathtv.com and a website that has all the answers of my book worked out. My book barely gives examples so it’s no use. What can I do to either get him to actually teach/teach better without causing him to hate me or what other resources can I use to teach myself?

P.S. – don’t recommend getting a new teacher cause he’s the only one that teaches thes subject & don
t recommend telling a counselor because the vp has sat in and she gave him good marks even though she stared out the window the whole time.
he leaves early for tennis matches. basicly we are left with a sub after he comes in and assigns homework

Question:
Here’s the question:

“If you had unlimited resources, what would you do to make the world a better place, especially as it would benefit you personally? Remember money and manpower are no obstacle?”

I was thinking maybe donating money to school for one thing cuz i hate it when they take away cool field trips cuz they can’t pay for it. but i can’t see how i’d write 4 paragraphs with that. i have no idea of how to make the world a better place AND have it benefit me personally. i was gonna do something about world hunger but that doesn’t benefit me. if it helps: i like music, poetry (‘n writing poetry/lyrics), playing the violin, playing the bass, finding new bands on the internet, family guy, south park, comedy. Should i donate to one of those things? like maybe donate to new instruments to school or give them money to add on to the school/hire teachers, so they can add new, cooler classes. Donate an ipod to every one? lol computers for the school? help!
Caine P and Socolboy both gave awesome answers! i’d mark both as best answers but idk if u can do tht. i think i’m gonna write about both, if i can. if i cant, i mite write about the health care one, cuz then maybe i can donate to scientists who study the cure for cancer. plus everybody need health care. not everybody needs new classes, field trips, and brand new instruments to survive. thanx to the ppl tht answered!

“I always wanted to be a teacher,” is something Principal Cathy Barnes remembers hearing more than once as she conducted interviews over the summer.

Most of the 26 newbies had no formal educator training. They were mostly midcareer professionals looking to make a change.

Barnes offered to give them a chance, and then set up training and coaching to help them succeed, she said. It took about a month for her to realize that not all of them would.

By the winter break, Barnes had let go four of those new teachers by invoking a state law that allows new teachers to be fired without giving a reason so long as it is done within the first half of the school year.

Known as the “97-day rule” because of the stated deadline, school administrators say it allows schools to quickly part ways with teachers that simply are not equipped for the job. However, union officials say the law makes it so easy to fire new teachers that principals do that rather than spend the time and money to mold them into better educators.

The district has approximately 9,000 teachers.

This year in Duval County, 29 out of the approximately 1,000 newly minted teachers were terminated under the 97-day rule or resigned in lieu of being terminated. Many other new teachers have also left the school system this year, though other reasons were cited for their departure. One was later rehired at another school.

After their 97-day probationary period expired on Jan. 9, those teachers received the security of knowing they cannot be fired midyear without due process. But they don’t have to be reappointed to their post at the end of the school year.

After three years, Florida teachers receive tenure, meaning if during the summer break a principal decides not to invite them back to a school, they must be offered other options.

The 97-day rule was created in 1997, a time when Education Commissioner Frank Brogan was introducing sweeping education reform. At the time, a group of lawmakers wanted to eliminate teacher tenure laws. Knowing that such a law would not pass, they settled for the 97-day rule instead.

Terrie Brady, president of the local teachers union, said of the 800 teachers who have left the school system this year, she feels the 97-day rule is responsible for more than 29, possibly close to 100.

She feels half a year isn’t long enough to determine who will become a great teacher.

“If somebody chooses to want to go into education, why would we not give them as much support as possible and encourage them to stay and make sure they are successful?” she said.

Brady said the school system lacks the money, time and resources to devote to professional development, especially since both new and veteran teachers are already bogged down with paperwork, mandates and other things that tax their time outside of the classroom. She advocates for more mentoring and training to help new teachers adapt to the job.

She said she agrees there are teachers who should removed from the classroom, but she thinks there should always be a process in place to hear both sides of the story and determine a fair course to follow.

Veteran educator Jim Williams was a principal for over a decade before the 97-day rule was in place and about the same time after.

During that time, he said he probably used the 97-day rule only twice.

“It was always that I cannot leave this person working with students because I believe they are doing damage to students,” Williams said. “Nor do I see between now and the end of the year any change.”

Williams said he always considered the impact of the decision on the students, as well as the employee. Now that he supervises a cluster of principals, he expects them to provide ample evidence supporting their decision to exercise the 97-day rule. In the end, however, he agrees that teachers who are not effective in the classroom should be removed.

“We’re not an employment agency; we’re a teaching institution and students ought to be primary in this,” he said.
