I am wanting to go back to school to become a kindergarten teacher and I haven’t the slightest clue where to start. I am having trouble looking for a school in the Stanislaus County area because I don’t know really what I am looking for. What courses do I need to take? About how long will it take? What can I do to persue my dream in becoming a teacher?? Please help!

I have an interview for a Kindergarten teacher job tomorrow in a public school district. I would be starting mid-year. I have a feeling that I might be asked how I would help the students transition to having a new teacher. Any suggestions of how to answer this? What other questions might be asked? My son will be 6 in March. He attends kindergarten in public school. Recently had meeting with teacher, principal, pt, ot, school psychologist who are all at a loss. They have not ever had a child present his unique set of characteristics. They don’t even know what tests to run/community resources to refer him to. His skills are not consistant. He has consistancy in cognitive abilities that are off the chart (tested to age 8). if you evaluate social skills with peers he scores poor (age 3) if you evaluate with adults scores high. His gross motor skills are very poor (age 3). He is able to participate in phy ed, all of his movements are very deliberate. fine motor skills are there – about average-but done HIS way (i.e. use thumb and ring finger to stack blocks) PT/OT unable to offer a bridge program. Only supplemental activities for us to use at home. He lacks many of the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder, add, adhd and aspergers.

My 5 year old son was recently tested for learning disabilities. I had a meeting with his teacher, speech teacher, resource room teacher, school psychologist, occupational therapist and another person who evaluated his speech/language. There was no parent advocate. He did fine on his I.Q. test, but his scores were depressed on the speech and language tests. They wouldn’t label him Learning Disabled; instead he was labeled S.I. (Speech Impaired) because of his age. They want to remove him out of his regular kindergarten class into resource room or move him to one of the other schools in the district for special education (which they were favoring). They believe his age (he just turned 5 in Nov) and learning disabilities are holding him back. He is also under an enormous amount of stress because he is trying so hard to keep up with the other children in his class. It was also mentioned that he will have to repeat kindergarten next year. They want me to make a decision right away so that if I want him put in another school, they can do it right after the winter vacation we have next week. I have no idea where to start. Should I get him evaluated elsewhere? Should I keep him in school at resource room so that he at least has access to his friends and a familiar environment? Do we send him to one of the 2 schools with the programs they suggested? We are okay with him getting left back and getting the extra help, but we are afraid he will be put in a class full of children with severe behavioral/mental problems which he doesn’t have. I don’t want to see him eaten alive. My husband and I have been to skill/modified classes and we know what’s in there. They’re usually holding facilities for kids that have no other place to go and no genuine desire for learning. I don’t want to turn my son off with school. Where do I start with all of this? I feel terrible for him and for what he is going through.

As far as I know, there are no behavioral problems and has been sweet and calm at home and at school. He is a little withdrawn because he can’t do the same kind of work the other kids are doing. When the teacher tries to give him modified work, he refuses to do it because he knows it’s “different” from the other kids and won’t budge. He is stubbornly trying to keep up.
Question:
We’ve had meetings with his teacher, resource room/summer school teacher, school psych and principal. They all believe that him redoing 3rd grade, having half-day resource/summer school and twice a week resource room during 3rd grade is the way to go. Our other option
is don’t hold him back, full day summer school, and daily resource
room when school starts to try and have him up to grade level by the end of next year. My son seems to not care either way, however I am worried because he is on the older side already having started kindergarten at 6 instead of 5. How do we make this decision that will be best for my son.
He is about half a year behind, in anything that involves reading. We where faced with this last year as well they wanted to hold him back in 2nd grade. We choose not too, had him in summer school all day and worked with him at home. At the start of 3rd grade he tested at grade level when the tests where read to him and his reading tested lower but over the course of the year has fallen behind again. He has not been tested for a learning disability yet the school doesn’t think that’s the problem so they wont test him, I have to find somewhere to test him privately.
