I was wondering if anyone had any idea what would be the best resource for teaching english to a chinese speaker. She is from taiwan, and has a basic understanding of the english language. Where she lacks is in her writing, and in her sentence structure. She also does not wish to go through the ESL books any longer as she feels this is not much to her, she is beyond ESL books. So that is my challenge, and was wondering if anyone had any adequate resources in which i could provide her. Also does anyone have any other teaching ideas and strategies i could provide her to make english learning fun and enjoyable, and where she will get something out of it. I appreciate the help, thanks!
Rosetta stone is a good resource, but not really what i am looking for, and it is costly, so i want to stray from that. I am looking more at books and workbooks specifically.

The Subject I am going to teach has no syllabus, no curriculum, it is a 2 year old program in school, the former teacher used no books had no sources to rely on and I am given the freedom to find anything I want to use. I would appreciate any tips on books, workbooks, printed materials, on-line resources I could check out and /or use to prepare for this challenge. The only thing I was told is that I am supposed to review key skills the students were supposed to acquire in their Elementary years. It is a little “broad” of a subject I would say, but any idea or tip can be a start. Thanks to all for your help!

These are pretty tough lessons to teach cuz the teacher/student usually feel they have to be *on* all the time.
What activities can I include to mix in with the lesson to make it more interesting and fun?
I’ve tried role plays that the student requested, and an Email session (where we write back and forth to each other for 5 mins rather than speaking).

I’ve been asked to tutor a 15 year old Korean in English and I am a little unsure as to what kind of lessons I should provide. The entire family seems to have only very basic English so it was a little difficult to find out what particular areas they wanted their child to learn, so I am thinking a general written and spoken English at a fairly basic level and obviously any help with current schoolwork that they struggle to understand. Can anyone recommend anything in particular I should concentrate on, lesson plans or resources etc?
I’ve never tutored before (apart from helping a number of foreign friends improve their english at Uni) but this appears a little more challenging and since I am getting paid I want to at least appear professional and organised.
A little more information.
Twiggy, I don’t plan to obtain a teaching degree. I was asked to help a family based on my reputation with helping fellow students polish their English in the past in a very informal way. This family is somewhat less skilled at English than I am used to dealing with as well as the student being a little younger which is why I have reservations about it. They seem to genuinely want my help, hence the offer to pay me (and god knows I could use the money). But if you legitimately believe this is a job best left to professionals I’ll take that as advice and consider recommending them to someone more qualified.
About my background. I’m a student currently nearing the end of the my degree in an English-related field (and doing very well) and the family are aware of this as well as the fact I am not a qualified teacher.
So my background is in English but not teaching hence my being a little unsure where to start with this student.

I’m mid-way through “teaching” American culture to a homestay group, and I’m looking for suggestions/links to resources that could pep up the class. To make a long story short, when hired I was told a) that the curriculum would be set for me and I’d just have to follow and b) they’d be fluent in English. Both turned out to be false, and this is turning out to be my most frustrating experience in 6 yrs. of classroom instruction (I would just teach English, but there’s another instructor for that). And I’m sure, from the perspective of my students, that this could be a more enjoyable experience.
The last 5 days of class can have anything to do with these overarching topics: Race Relations in the US, San Francisco, Food, Sports, and a basic “what not to leave the U.S. without knowing.”
They’re high school/junior high with intermediate to beginning English skills.

My son is 2 and I have heard it is easier for children to learn a second language when they are young. I myself only speak English but I would really like for him to learn Latin. That being said can you suggest helpful resources for teaching him Latin and/or suggest fun ways for him to learn a second language.
